What your KitchenAid refrigerator is telling you

Alerts and codes from KitchenAid’s online Product Help articles for full-size refrigerators, undercounter beverage centers and freestanding ice makers. These refrigerators show few owner-facing codes; the support pages do not give individual meanings for F-series (F# E#) codes, only that a flashing F calls for a power reset and then service.

That code isn’t on this list. It may be specific to your model, so call or text me at (480) 292-4746 with the code and model number.

Flashing F

A flashing letter ‘F’ on the display means the refrigerator has detected a fault; the support page gives no more specific meaning.

Try this first: Reset power by turning off the circuit breaker or unplugging the unit for one minute, then restoring power, making sure the cooling function is on afterward. If the problem persists, call me.

PO

Power outage: the power to the refrigerator was off and the freezer temperature rose to 18°F (-8°C) or higher.

Try this first: Acknowledge the alert to clear it (on models with this display, press the button under ‘Confirm’).

Temperature alarm

Over-temperature alert: the refrigerator rose above 48°F (9°C) or the freezer above 15°F (-9°C) for more than 1.5 hours.

Try this first: Press Alarm to clear the flashing indicator. If the temperature does not return to normal, follow the temperature troubleshooting steps for your model.

Door ajar alarm

A refrigerator door or freezer drawer has been left open for 2 to 5 minutes (depending on model) while cooling is on.

Try this first: Close all doors; make sure bins, shelves or food packages are not keeping a door from closing and that the refrigerator is level.

COOLING OFF

Not a fault: cooling has been turned off, so the refrigerator and freezer will not cool.

Try this first: Turn cooling back on as described in your owner’s manual (on many models, press and hold LOCK and MEASURED FILL together for 3 seconds).

CL

The beverage center’s internal temperature is too low.

Also shown as LO

Try this first: Make sure the door is fully closed. After restocking with warm items or a power outage, allow time for the temperature to stabilize.

Undercounter beverage centers only.

Ice maker Service light

The freestanding ice maker has detected that service is needed.

Try this first: Turn the ice maker off and back on. If the Service light comes on again, call me.

Freestanding (undercounter) ice makers only.

Ice maker Cleaning light

The freestanding ice maker needs cleaning (the Cleaning Needed / Cleaning Cycle indicator is lit).

Try this first: Clean the ice maker as described in the owner’s manual; cleaning is recommended about every 9 months or when ice production drops noticeably.

Freestanding (undercounter) ice makers only.

When to call me

If the safe check doesn’t clear the code, or the same code keeps coming back, the refrigerator needs a real diagnosis. Error codes point to the system that failed, not always the exact part, so I test before I replace anything.

Never open panels, bypass a safety switch or work on gas or wiring yourself. Unplug the appliance or turn off its breaker if you smell burning or see water near electrical parts.

Upfront pricing

$65

Service call, waived when you approve the repair. You get an exact price before any work starts.

Stacked washer and dryer units have a $125 service call, also waived with the repair.

Where These Codes Come From

I checked every code on this page against KitchenAid’s own documentation on October 18, 2026, and left out any code I couldn’t confirm there. Meanings can differ between models and model years, so your owner’s manual or the tech sheet inside your refrigerator has the final word for your exact model.
