Appliance Repair Guides

Plain answers to the problems I see most, with the safe checks you can do yourself before you book. Every check and number comes from the manufacturers' own support pages and manuals, plus the public sources listed in each guide.

Start with the symptom

Settings, vents, door seals, coils, the freezer-works case and garage heat.

Breakers, the gas valve, cycle settings, lint and the vent, gas and electric.

The pump filter, drain hose, standpipe height, suds and drain error codes.

Spin settings, unbalanced loads, the lid or door lock, suds and drain problems.

The filter, the disposal and its knockout plug, the drain hose loop and air gap.

The switch or arm, freezer temperature, filter, water supply and hard water.

Demo mode, control lock and the breaker, then the igniter or bake element.

Find the leak by where the water shows up: filter, supply line, drain or dispenser.

Temperature ratings, garage-ready models, placement, coils and Phoenix heat.

Cloudy glasses, white film, etching, rinse aid, cleaners and local hardness.

The 50 percent rule, age, warranty, running costs and what to do with the old one.

A lifespan table for major appliances, upkeep that helps and what hard water does.
